Connect/Reposition
Branding, Promotion, and
Wayfinding for an Experimental Dance Performance at the
Georgetown Steamplant, Seattle, WA
About: Study of Time and Motion is a
collaborative performance project that explores human connection
within the modern push toward efficiency. Through a series of
site specific performances this work reactivates Seattleās
vacant Georgetown Steam Plant and the Duwamish River it once
relied upon. Incorporating video installation at the plant and
public signposts along the environs of the Duwamish River, this
multidisciplinary project invites viewers to think through how
the body moves us forward.
Challenge: As an environment, we
were not able to alter the Georgetown Steamplant substantially;
all backgrounds etc had to come from the Plant intact. We were
also struck with how to move audiences through the space,
without causing distractions to the historic and abandoned feel.
Solution: Designing the space
required an unortodox approach where the only two things we
could manipulate were where the audience views the work from and
the basic lighting. Consequently, signage and wayfinding, along
with introductory materials (projection video, pamphlets, and
posters) because our main method for altering the viewers'
mindsets as they came into the space.
Result: By creating a haunting
atmnsphere using projections, lights, and sounds, we were able
to position audiences in unconvetional spots. This combination
of elements created an unnerving, slight askew effect, which
helped create a very unique world.
